Mr. Sonnenmark is a marine engineer with over 40 years of experience in the design, construction, and operation of naval and commercial vessels. He founded Waterborne General, Inc. in 1994 to provide specialized expertise to shipbuilders, design agents, ship operators and marine equipment manufacturers.
Mr. Sonnenmark has led project teams designing the fluid, propulsion, electric power and control systems for US Navy, Coast Guard, Army combatant ships, auxiliary vessels, and small craft. He has supervised shipyard trades in the construction, conversion, post-delivery modifications, and repair of a wide range of vessels
Mr. Sonnenmark holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He performed R&D for industrial control components before sailing on commercial vessels, earning a USCG chief engineer’s license. Coming ashore, Mr. Sonnenmark was a project manager for shipyards and an engineering department manager for design agents before founding Waterborne General. He is a member of ASNE and IEEE; as a SNAME member, he is on the editorial board of the (mt) quarterly and is a member of T&R Panel SD-5 Advanced Ships and Craft.
